Callaway Announces 273-Promo Tied to Els’ Win…

Just got wind of a pretty cool promo that Callaway Golf is doing in honor of Ernie Els’ major championship victory at Royal Lytham & St. Annes. Based on Els’ British Open score of 273 (67-70-68-68), Callaway will — for 273 hours beginning at 12:00am PST Wednesday, July 25 – sell its RAZR Fit driver for $273 and its HEX Black Tour golf ball for $27.30 online at shop.callawaygolf.com.

The promotion will also be available at participating retailers. The Big Easy used both the RAZR Fit driver and the HEX Black Tour golf ball to propel himself to the second Open Championship victory of his Hall of Fame career.

The Callaway RAZR Fit driver has now won 10 professional tournaments worldwide, with five victories coming in the last seven weeks.

About his RAZR Fit, Ernie said on Sunday, “I hit a lot of drivers on the back nine and I was just trying to make birdies. I was right in the moment…I was really just playing the shot in the moment.”

The HEX Black Tour golf ball has been used in four of the last seven wins on the European Tour, where the ball’s aerodynamic properties help to mitigate typically windy conditions.

The offer is valid at Shop.CallawayGolf.com and at participating retailers. Pricing is determined by individual retailers and may vary. The promotion lasts from July 25, 2012 at 12:00AM PST through August 5, 2012 at 9:00AM PST.

Callaway Finds A New Leading Man (for now)

Anthony Thornley, Callaway Golf Interim PresidentCallaway announced that their President and CEO, George Fellows, resigned stating personal reasons. Fellows has been at the head of Callaway since 2005, his mission was focused on expansion, product cost reduction, and help golf return to the Olympics. Along with his resignation came their second quarter results and which posted a net loss of $55 million.

With this new development, Callaway has had to appoint an interim president. The honor has gone to Callaway Golf board member Anthony Thornley. A great fit for Callaway not only has he been invested in the company while sitting on their board for the past 6 years, he is also an avid golfer, gaming a single digit handicap.

For Thornley, it’s not necessarily the best time to take the lead at a company who posted an unfortunate net loss in their second quarter. However, the changes you can expect to see Thornley make is to first focus on marketing where they have been outdone by some of their competitors in recent years. There is also expected to be a round of layoffs as they reorganize. Thornly will bring in his own leadership skills and style to Callaway in hopes to reboot the company.

Callaway Golf is in no danger of leaving the golf world anytime soon it has been a staple in golf world ever since the introduction of the Big Bertha. This July marks the 10th anniversary of the passing of Callaway founder Ely Callaway.

Callaway Golf and Justin Timberlake Launch Facebook Contest

Callaway Golf just kicked off a social media contest with golfer and entertainer (and Callaway Golf staff pro since 2008) Justin Timberlake. The effort centers on a contest, “Tee Off with Diablo Octane and Justin Timberlake,” which ties into Father’s Day.  Two lucky golfers a once-in-a-lifetime golf experience –they will be treated to a round at Mirimichi, Timberlake’s world class golf course in Millington, Tenn. where they will meet and hit golf balls with Justin Timberlake. They will also enjoy a custom fitting experience for a full set of premium Callaway clubs and play 18 holes on Mirimichi’s Championship Course.

The contest launched last week  ton Callaway’s Facebook page (Facebook.com/Callaway), where participants can also win one of 25 Callaway Diablo Octane Drivers, the powerful new club that is Timberlake’s current driver of choice.

Timberlake & the Father’s Day Connection:  Timberlake was first introduced to the game by his dad, Paul Harless, on the Mirimichi course that they now own together.  Over the years, playing together and enjoying time on the golf course has strengthened the bond between them.  Callaway’s contest encourages fans to share an emotional and entertaining story that describes how the game of golf has brought them closer to someone in their life.

To enter the contest, fans need to enter a written submission on Callaway’s Facebook page of up to 100 words by June 19, 2011, the contest’s closing date.  In July, Callaway will announce 25 finalists and the grand prize winner will then be chosen by popular vote on Facebook. All 25 finalists will be awarded a new Callaway Diablo Octane Driver, the first club made with a groundbreaking ultra lightweight material called Forged Composite™ that Callaway co-developed with Automobili Lamborghini.

Case Closed: Callaway Loses Patent Fight Over Pro V1 Ball

Acushnet Co, the parent company of Titleist, said it has won a long-running patent battle with Carlsbad-based Callaway Golf over the popular Pro V1 golf ball. On Thursday, a U.S. District Judge in Delaware denied Callaway’s request for a new trial and officially closed the five-year-old case.

Callaway sued Acushnet, claiming that the Pro V1 violated four Callaway patents (these came from Callaway purchase of the Top Flite golf ball business from a bankrupt Spalding in 2003). Though initially, Callaway was victorious (partially) with the possibility of collecting nearly a quarter million dollars from past sales of Pro V1 balls, Acushnet appealed. Last year, a jury ruled that the four patents were invalid because they were not new. Callaway fought the ruling but was ultimately unsuccessful.

The Pro V1 ranks as the most popular high-performance ball in golf. An interesting point that probably worked to Acushnet’s favor was that the company introduced the Pro V1 ball to professional players in 2000 — well before before the patents in question were issued in 2001 and 2003.
